The Essential Book

Sweet Little Lies
by Lauren Conrad.

Vapid? Yes. Frivilous? Oh, yeah. Fictional? No effing way.

So maybe SLL isn't the next great American masterpiece, but it is - much like Conrad's former television show The Hills - a great guilty pleasure. Sweet Little Lies will be Lauren's second book; the first, entitled LA Candy, released last year and is the prequel to this. The premise of the series is simple: Lauren Conrad (oops...I mean Jane Roberts) moves to LA with her best friend to intern for a event planner, when one night she's approached by a television producer who casts her and her friend Scarlett in his new project: a reality TV show.

The book is probably less contrived than Conrad's "reality" show, which is a bit ironic since it is marked as a work of fiction. Regardless it's an engaging, somewhat vouyeristic read, full of insights into the entertaintment industry, The City of Angels, and how freakin' bitchy teenage girls can be (the book's villian goes by the name of Madison - her character pays thinly vieled homage to Conrad's nemsis, Heidi Pratt.)

LA Candy left off with Jane humiliated, betrayed, and left alone with the vicious Madison...I'm counting down till February 3rd to find out what will happen to her!

The Essential Band

Posted by Zara Husaini on , , ,

Hey Monday

I was lucky enough to meet Hey Monday's lead singer during a previous internship, and I can only say fabulous things about this person. The singer is hugely talented, incredibly personable, and absolutely adorable...oh and did I mention that she's a girl?

Before you assume that Hey Monday must be a whiny, electric guitar-slapping girl band, let me clear a few things up. The band is composed of three guys (Mike Gentile, Alex Lipshaw, and Michael Moriarty) and one girl by the name of Cassadde Pope. Each member is great, but Cassadde is definitely the group's superstar. It's rare to see a girl who can hold her own on the pop-punk scene, but Cassadde certainly has it under control; she has an incredible voice and sings with raw emotion.

The band is neither emo nor hand-poundingly hardcore. Their real strength lies in their ballads, which are both realistic and well-penned. Cassadde never once crosses the line into "popstar" territory - even though her voice is versatile enough to belt out a radio-ready pop anthem, she refuses to sell out and become a solo artist.

My favorite Hey Monday song? Definitely "Candles", one of their earlier numbers...but the recently released "6 Months" is giving "Candles" some competition!

The Essential Album

Hope For Haiti Now
Various Artists

Nothing warms my heart quite as much as witnessing the rich and famous use their resources to bring about positive change. And while not everyone can pull an Angelina and adopt half of the starving children in the world, small-scale contributions are always accepted and appreciated.

With that being said, I think Hope For Haiti Now embodies the spirit of giving in a way that no monetary donation ever could. Many of the biggest names in the music industry gave of something far more precious to create this compilation - time. Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Hudson are just a few of the artists who gave of their talent in order to help the various Haiti relief funds that have been established. 100% of the album's proceeds go to these charities, as do the proceeds of Jay Z, Bono, The Edge, and Rihanna's single, "Stranded - Haiti Mon Amour."

The album contains new versions of chart-topping hits such as Beyonce's "Halo" and Madonna's "Like A Prayer", but even more impressive are the covers. One standout is Shakira's rendition of "I'll Stand By You", which is unlike anything youve ever heard from the She-Wolf.

So do yourself (not to mention the thousands of people who were harmed in this disaster) a favor and buy this album. It's a mere $7.99 contribution that could make a huge difference.

The Essential Swimsuit

Betsey Johnson's Layer Cake Tankini Top

Tired of slaving away for the perfect bikini bod? Slip into this adorable tankini for a more modest look. Even if you've met all of your fitness goals, the suit is one of the most original I've ever seen. True to her usual flashy style, Betsey layered tiers of fabric over one another to create a tunic-like swimsuit that flatters all body types. The dusty rose shade is neither too dark nor too bright, perfect for girls of all complexions.

The suit only comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large, but it includes adjustable straps and removable cups. If you've ever worn Betsey's corset looks before (this piece feature corset boning inside) you know that they tend to run a bit small - so choose your size accordingly.

Try this piece for your winter getaway - you can resume your carb-cutting in the spring. That is, if you don't eschew bikinis in favor of fluttery tankinis forever!

The Essential Beauty Kit

"Walk Of Shame Set" by Too Faced

Most of you can probably attest to the fact that strutting down the street in a minidress and stilettos isn't quite as appealing at 10 am - especially if you're doing the walk of shame bare-faced and stale-mouthed. The people at Too Faced obviously agree, since they've created a perfectly convenient carry-all case for those nights when you get sidetracked by a sexy stranger. Packaged in a pink and black pouch that has a playful, lingerie-type feel, this set is slim enough to slide into a purse before a big night out. It contains all of the basic *essentials* for a quick morning prep session. A colorless face primer, an eye primer, a compact with eye shadows and bronzer, and a nude lip stick are all included - so are a mini-toothbrush and a package of Oral Fixation mints.

This set isn't made exclusively for walk of shame shape-ups. It's also really great for travelling, tossing into a school or work bag, or stashing in a glove compartment for a quick touch-up on the go. The best part is that everything in the kit works for women of all complexions - and don't worry about running out of supplies, just use the bag as a cute clutch once you've used up the contents!

The Essential Stars of 2009

2009 is over, but it's never too late to celebrate the stars that emerged last year. Here are a few people and things that really caught my attention in '09.

Lady Gaga: I've never seen a woman as bold, creative, or eccentric as Lady Gaga. She made her mark this year with her off-the-wall fashion statements, over-the-top performances, and outlandish statements - but the thing that gave Gaga credibility in '09 is her undeniable talent for giving the people exactly what they want. She recorded smash hit after smash hit this year, and has certainly established herself as an essential part of popular culture today. In fact, she served as a huge inspiration for the next person on my list. Adam Lambert was the breakout star on American Idol this year. He single-handedly constructed not only his own career, but the cultural phenomenon that surrounds the show itself as well. He is wild, raw, and unbridled, and his voice is in a league of its own. He isn't afraid to raise eyebrows or cultivate a controversial image, and while not everyone loves this showman, he will never change who he is to satisfy the public. One person who doesn't have to worry about becoming more likable is Taylor Swift. In the past year, Taylor has achieved sweetheart status all over America. The best thing about Taylor Swift is her uncanny ability to make people root for her. When Kanye West insulted her on national television, he actually did her a favor. Swift displayed such immense maturity and poise in that situation. By staying calm and diplomatic, she won over everyone in America...including one of the hottest guys in Hollywood. Thanks to Taylor Lautner, 2009 was the year of Team Jacob. The Twilight craze was nothing new, but up until recently, only rebels and cynics supported the third wheel on the saga's love triangle. In my opinion, Jacob was never a very endearing character on paper - it took a muscle-toting teen by the name of Taylor to create an intense fan base surrounding the werewolf, effectively creating a rift between teenage girls everywhere. Although vampires (The Vampire Diaries was a more realistic take on the trend, starring Nina Dobrev, a much more appealing heroine than Twilight's Kristin Stewart could ever be ) seemed to rule everywhere else, Taylor was Twilight's breakout star this year. Lautner and Swift both had an amazing year, and next year they'll be starring in the movie Valentine's Day. Speaking of movies, my favorite of the year was 17 Again, which turned Zac Efron into a bona fide leading man. He was great in the movie, which charming, funny, and not quite as squeaky-clean as the rest of Efron's work. And while I love me some body-shifting entertainment, I have to say that the best movie of '09 was Precious. Granted, the film was depressing and graphic, but it did something that most underdog films do not - it presented its star as a girl who fails more often than she succeeds. While her dreams of becoming a star are not fulfilled, she manages to achieve transcendence in her own small way. Without giving away too much, I'll say that the ending of this film was equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. While it may not have been as inspirational and extraordinary as -say, Slumdog Millionaire, the story seemed much more plausible. On the small-screen, it was all about Glee. This show is one of the most original things I've ever seen. Loved by critics and audiences alike, it was a career-making, trend-setting, groundbreaking part of 2009's popular culture scene.

2009 was a year full of fashion revelations as well. my personal favorite trend was the whole high-waisted, business-y skirt thing. Not only is this look classy, it's flattering and versatile. Gladiator sandals made a huge splash in '09 as well, and they looked especially cute with maxidresses.
